Vermeer Adds MT500 Material Transporter for Utility-Scale Solar Projects
Vermeer is simplifying utility-scale solar pile layout with the MT500 material transporter. With a single button press, one operator can automate the transport and placement of W-beam piles, reducing the manual labor typically required during pile installation.
Designed for ground-mount solar projects, the MT500 handles W-beam piles ranging from 10 to 25 feet (3.05 to 7.6 m) in length. It uses an automated arm to pick up individual piles weighing up to 400 pounds (181 kg) and place them at designated locations, a task that often requires multiple workers using skid steers or telehandlers. Third-party GPS systems can be used with the MT500, which incorporates point-to-point and row-to-row automation for travel across the solar field.
The MT500 is controlled using a full-function wireless remote. Built-in safety features include object detection technology and integrated bump bars that help slow or stop the machine when obstacles are detected. An emergency stop is also included, while an amber beacon alerts nearby workers whenever the transporter is operating in remote-control or automated mode.
The machine's adjustable pile rack accommodates 10- to 25-foot W-beam piles and supports a total payload of up to 5,000 pounds (2,268 kg), allowing crews to carry multiple pile lengths on the same project.
The transporter rides on rubber tracks with a ground pressure of 6.4 psi (44 kPa), helping minimize ground disturbance. It also has 12 inches (30 cm) of ground clearance for traveling across rough ground and in wet jobsites.
Power comes from a 74-horsepower (55 kW) Tier 4 Final/Stage V Rehlko diesel engine that does not require diesel exhaust fluid (DEF). Its fuel tank holds 35 gallons (132 L).
Moving the MT500 between jobsites does not require major disassembly. The pile rack and arm can be stowed for transport, bringing the machine to 88 inches (224 cm) wide and 187 inches (475 cm) long.
The MT500 includes onboard diagnostics that provide fault descriptions and troubleshooting guidance to operators. It also uses the same display interface as Vermeer's PD25R pile driver, allowing crews with experience operating that machine to transition more quickly.
The VermeerOne™ platform gives operators and fleet managers access to machine data for tracking performance and maintenance. Vermeer's dealer network also provides service and support for the MT500.
