JCB Expands Soil Compaction Range with New VM58D and VM78D
JCB is growing its compaction portfolio with the arrival of the VM58D and VM78D. Competing in the 4–8 tonne category, these single-drum compactors use EU Stage V diesel engines to provide cleaner operation, greater efficiency, and improved compaction productivity.
The VM58D and VM78D represent JCB's latest additions to its growing family of soil compactors. Complementing the larger VM118D, VM128D and VM138D, the new models deliver operating weights of 5.4 and 7.1 tonnes and feature a common rear-platform design that promotes component consistency. Both machines draw power from a 55 kW JCB by Rehlko diesel engine, providing emissions-compliant performance without the need for DEF additives or SCR systems.
Instead of a traditional rear axle, the machines utilize direct independent hydraulic wheel drives. This system provides dedicated work and travel traction settings and enables gradeability of up to 60%. The axle-free design permits a lower engine installation, contributing to improved balance and stability when operating on challenging terrain.
Delivering 81kN of centrifugal force, the VM58D combines a 2,700kg front drum section with a vibration frequency of 31Hz and a 1.7mm amplitude. The larger VM78D increases compaction capability with a 4,050kg drum, offering variable frequencies of 29Hz or 36Hz and amplitude settings of 1.8mm or 0.8mm for outputs of 138kN and 84kN of centrifugal force.
The VM58D features a 22mm drum with a 10mm reinforcing ring, while the VM78D uses a thicker 25mm drum with the same reinforcement. This heavy-duty construction delivers high vibrating mass and exceptional durability in demanding compaction applications.
JCB has equipped all five soil compactor models with the same redesigned operator stand, providing a consistent working environment across the range. The smaller models are available to order with either a ROPS/FOPS canopy or a climate-controlled cab.
Among the cab's features are LED work lights at the front and rear, integrated amber beacons, flat window glazing to simplify replacement, climate control, a radio and a fabric-covered seat for operator comfort.
Connected Compaction is available for order on both models through JCB's LiveLink telematics platform. Included with the VM78D is a five-year LiveLink subscription, while the available INTELLICOMPACTION system offers advanced compaction monitoring to help achieve target density with fewer passes.
JCB will initially offer the compactors with smooth drum configurations, while a padfoot drum option is set to join the lineup at a later date.
