Caterpillar expands control choices with joystick option for next-generation Cat® 140 motor grader
Caterpillar is broadening operator control options on its next-generation Cat® 140 motor grader, introducing an all-new joystick (JOY) configuration alongside the traditional lever and steering wheel (LVR) setup. Available globally beginning in early 2026, the updated 140 delivers the efficiency, productivity, comfort and uptime customers expect from Caterpillar’s next-generation platform—now with greater flexibility in how operators run the machine.
Designed with operator comfort in mind, Caterpillar’s joystick controls minimize hand and arm movement compared to conventional lever and steering wheel systems, helping reduce fatigue and support consistent productivity throughout the shift. The ergonomic, three-axis joystick layout places transmission control, directional changes and gear shifting on the left joystick, while the right joystick manages drawbar, circle and moldboard functions, along with electronic throttle and manual differential lock control.
Cat joystick motor graders also feature exclusive follow-steer technology, allowing front wheels to respond directly to joystick input. When paired with the new nine-forward-speed transmission and dedicated finish gear, the system delivers smooth, controlled operation during fine grading, final passes and curb work.
Visibility and safety are further enhanced through the next-generation cab design. Angled doors, a tapered engine enclosure and a sloped rear window provide clear sightlines to the moldboard, tires and rear of the machine. A standard rearview camera displays live feed on the 10-inch (254-mm) touchscreen monitor, while optional integrated smart cameras offer 360-degree views. Cat Detect with People Detection adds another layer of protection by alerting operators when individuals enter the grader’s hazard zone.
The in-cab touchscreen also serves as the gateway to Caterpillar’s expanded next-generation technology suite. The Cat 140 can be ordered Grade 3D Ready, enabling faster, more accurate grading with improved efficiency. Reducing operator input and minimizing passes, automatic blade control improves jobsite efficiency while lowering operating costs. Features such as Position Sensing Shift Cylinder (PSC), E-Fence avoidance and dual IMU sensors to support easy mastless upgrades, Cat Cross Slope Assist lets operators manually manage one moldboard end as the system controls the other.
Engineered for durability and efficiency, the next-generation Cat 140 helps reduce fuel consumption and operating costs. Centralized service locations and extended, synchronized maintenance intervals streamline daily upkeep and keep machines on the job longer.
