Cat® Introduces Next-Gen 6040 Mining Shovel Focused on Fuel Efficiency and Load Accuracy

As mining operations push for higher output with tighter margins, efficiency has never been more critical. The new 400-tonne-class Cat® 6040 hydraulic mining shovel builds on a trusted platform, delivering performance, durability, and efficiency operators need to stay productive shift after shift.

Built with more standard tech, including Cat Payload, the updated design enables precise bucket load measurements to support consistent payload targets and efficient operations.

Efficient by Design

The 6040’s Hydraulic Optimization system delivers oil flow only when and where it’s needed, helping reduce fuel use and component wear. By moving away from constant maximum output and instead matching flow and pressure to demand, the system improves overall efficiency by up to 15% compared to traditional shovels.

Powered by dual Cat C32B engines, the 6040 delivers 1,550 kW (2,079 hp) allowing for standard shovel operation or relocation under single-engine power. Multiple engine configurations are offered for global emissions compliance, meeting U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final / Stage V standards without DEF, as well as China Nonroad Stage III requirements. Optional extended oil change intervals keep the machine working longer by cutting maintenance downtime in half. High breakout forces up to 1201 kN (269,996 lbf) help prevent bucket stall, while a closed-loop swing system delivers fast, energy-efficient cycles.

With Standard Operator Assist – Enhanced Motion Control, linkage-mounted angle sensors manage boom and stick movement to prevent abrupt stops and contact between components. By controlling pressure fluctuations and minimizing shock, the system boosts productivity, eases operator fatigue, and protects key components.

Enhancing Comfort, Safety, and Operator Confidence

Designed to enhance safety, comfort, and training efficiency, the new advanced cab delivers 40% greater visibility and includes a floor window for a clear view of the tracks. A quiet 68 dBA interior, modern climate control, ergonomic joysticks, and a 10-inch touchscreen with live diagnostics keep operators in control. In-cab training is streamlined with Caterpillar’s patented three-seat layout, which includes an adjustable operator seat, a raised trainer seat with a laptop workstation, and a fold-away auxiliary seat.

Operators benefit from enhanced visibility with Standard Vision 360, which integrates four cameras to provide a complete 360° perspective. A hydraulically operated 45° access stairway ensures safe ingress and egress, even in emergency situations when the engine is off. Beyond the cab, the 6040’s innovative hydraulic system increases productivity with five dedicated circuits for multi-function operation across cylinder, travel, and swing movements.

Ready for What’s Next

Built for the future, the updated cab riser combines integrated Cat electronics with a refined system design to support changing technologies and power options. ProductLink™ Elite comes standard, improving connectivity and data visibility. The platform also supports retrofit capability for Cat MineStar technologies including Fleet, Terrain, Detect and Health, and enables future electric power module integration for the next generation 6040.

Built Tough for Maximum Uptime

The new 6040 is built to handle the harshest mine environments, with a target design life of 60,000+ hours. Increased machine weight and strengthened structures contribute to durability, while fixed-axle rollers and idlers eliminate the need for grease.

An integrated single line grease injection system with fixed pins reduces system complexity by lowering the number of components and grease lines to all pins. This design minimizes potential failures, simplifies troubleshooting, and improves grease distribution.

Improved hose routing, validated through a detailed audit, enhances serviceability and supports long operating intervals without major hydraulic leaks. Service access is streamlined with anti-slip walkways and a retractable station for quick fluid replenishment. A boom-mounted hydraulic block allows faster access to critical components and creates more working space.

The latest electronic upgrades support Cat Electronic Technician, making it easier for dealer technicians to quickly identify and resolve issues. Remote Troubleshoot enables dealers to assess issues remotely without affecting performance, while Remote Flash allows software updates to be completed at a time that suits operations without requiring a technician on site.
