BHP, Rio Tinto and Caterpillar Test Battery-Electric Haul Trucks
About three months into field testing at BHP's Jimblebar iron ore mine in Western Australia's Pilbara region, two Cat 793 XE Early Learner battery-electric haul trucks are collecting real-world operating data at the working mine.
The collaboration brings together BHP, Rio Tinto and Caterpillar to evaluate battery-electric haul truck technology through an ongoing field trial as part of the companies' efforts to reduce emissions from large-scale mining operations.
Before beginning field testing at BHP's Jimblebar iron ore mine, the battery-electric haul trucks completed a series of safety and operational tests at Caterpillar's Tucson Proving Ground in Arizona. The vehicles are among a fleet of seven Early Learner trucks being evaluated worldwide.
Data gathered during the trial will help assess battery-electric haul truck performance, the supporting infrastructure required and the technology's potential for wider deployment, including high-powered static and dynamic charging systems. Early-phase testing has surpassed 100 operating hours and more than 200 test laps, providing insight into the trucks' safety, maintenance requirements and overall performance.
Upcoming testing will focus on dynamic charging, allowing the trucks to receive power while they continue operating. If successful, the technology could improve operational efficiency.
