🧠 Cold Weather Logic Puzzle
The Situation:
It’s –22°C (–8°F) at a remote jobsite.
An excavator sat overnight with no block heater plugged in.
This morning:
- The engine cranks slowly
- The machine starts, but idle is rough
- Hydraulic functions are very sluggish
- Hydraulic oil temp stays low
- No active fault codes
- DEF tank heater is working
❄️ The Challenge:
What should the operator do FIRST to prevent damage and reduce wear?
Choose ONE:
A. Increase engine RPM immediately to warm it up faster
B. Begin light hydraulic cycling at low idle
C. Put the machine straight to work under load
D. Shut down and wait for temperatures to rise naturally
🧩 Think It Through:
- Cold hydraulic oil = restricted flow
- High RPM + cold oil = potential cavitation
- Load before warm-up = accelerated wear
