Does anyone out there know how bad it is to have engine oil in an engine that is not being used for extended periods of time, like maybe only being used 40 hours or even less in a year?  What if it’s synthetic oil, does that make a difference?

I’m sure the oil manufacturers would have us change it at least yearly (or more) but I can’t understand why this would be needed.  The oil can sit in containers over time but can’t sit in an engine? What give with that?  I’m sure they have lots of reasons, but are they legit?

No big deal if it’s synthetic. Just change it once a year and run it long enough to warm up. If it’s regular oil it can break down faster so synthetic is better.
