Hey folks,

I keep seeing motor graders at sites after excavation. I recently heard that the Caterpillar 140M sometimes starts drifting a little when used for long hours. I know the main function of motor graders is mainly for leveling and road prep, but does this issue really affect the work quality? Should I worry about this if I own one for small projects, or is renting a better option?

If not this model, then which model would you guys suggest for road leveling work? I was thinking about the Cat 140M, but this hydraulic drift issue is making me reconsider. Any recommendations based on real experience would really help!

I’ve seen this issue come up a few times with the 140M, and hydraulic drift usually points to internal leakage in the control valves or worn cylinder seals. It’s worth checking the hydraulic oil condition and making sure there’s no contamination affecting valve performance. Regular calibration of the hydraulic system can also help reduce unexpected blade movement. Keeping your Cat motor grader well-maintained really makes a difference in preventing these drift problems.
